"Posterula", a gateway to Terracina
sketchfab
On top of a hill, entering the "Parco Oasi" from the south-west side of Terracina's ancient walls, Italy, lies an old gateway to the city. According to Lugli, this gate is actually the "Porta del Buco," or "Posterula," which gave its name to the surrounding district. This passage connected upper Terracina to the lower part of the city and consisted of a small architraved entrance made from recycled materials taken from ancient Roman monuments. Today, this ancient city gate is obstructed and only visible from outside as you climb up through the "Parco Oasi." The inside of the door was blocked at the end of the 18th century to make way for a new road in Posterula. Noteworthy are the remains of an old funerary inscription found on a calcareous jamb, with letters about 7-8 centimeters high, which read: "H (oc) · M (onumentum) · / IN FR (onte) I P (edes) XXX."
