Medical apocalypses can also occur due to pandemics, whether they are naturally occurring or human-induced. Additionally, apocalyptic fiction may involve end-time scenarios like the Last Judgment, Second Coming, or Ragnarok, as well as more imaginative occurrences such as zombie apocalypses, cybernetic uprisings, technological singularities, dysgenics, and alien invasions. The story can revolve around attempts to prevent an apocalypse event from occurring, coping with its aftermath, or taking place in a post-apocalyptic world. Post-apocalyptic tales often unfold in a non-technological future world where scattered remnants of society and technology remain. Ancient civilizations such as the Babylonians and Jews produced apocalyptic literature that explored the end of the world and human society. The Epic of Gilgamesh, written around 2000-1500 BC, is one example of ancient apocalyptic literature. In the modern era, recognizable apocalyptic novels have existed since at least the early 19th century, with Mary Shelley's The Last Man being published in 1826.
