Paul-Henri Thiry, Baron d'Holbach was a French-German author, philosopher, encyclopedist and key figure in the French Enlightenment. Born Paul Heinrich Dietrich in Edesheim near Landau in the Rhenish Palatinate, he spent most of his life working and living in Paris where he maintained a salon. He was widely recognized for his atheism and prolific writings against religion, including the well-known book "The System of Nature" published in 1770.
