Aurél Bernáth, a renowned Hungarian painter, made his mark from 1895 until his passing in 1982. He honed his craft at Nagybánya under the tutelage of István Réti and János Thorma. As a soldier, Bernath fought valiantly in the First World War, displaying unwavering bravery in the face of adversity. In 1921, he relocated to Vienna, where his artistic style began to take shape under the profound influence of German Expressionism's unrelenting force. Herwarth Walden extended an invitation to Bernath to showcase his work at the esteemed Sturm Gallery in Berlin. Two years later, Bernath returned to Hungary and joined the KUT, rapidly emerging as a leading figure within the influential Gresham Circle during the 1930s. As a respected educator, Bernath taught at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts from 1945 until his retirement in 1974. For nearly a century, from 1848 to 1949, Bernath worked tirelessly as an editor for the esteemed journal of Hungarian Art, leaving an indelible mark on the world of art journalism. Following 1947, many of Bernath's profound writings on art theory were published and met with widespread acclaim.
