Maximilien de Béthune, the 1st Duke of Sully, was a nobleman and statesman who stood by King Henry IV of France as his trusted right-hand man. He played a crucial role in establishing a strong centralized administrative system in France using coercion and innovative techniques that proved highly effective. While historians acknowledge that his policies were not entirely original, they also note that most of them were later reversed. In addition to his administrative achievements, Maximilien de Béthune is known for his neo-Stoicism and his ideas about virtue, prudence, and discipline, which have been studied extensively by historians. The Pavillon Sully in the Palais du Louvre was named in honor of the Duc de Sully. Marie-Anne Collot, a French sculptor, made a name for herself as a portraitist who worked closely with influential figures such as Diderot and Catherine the Great. She donated this bust to them, showcasing her talent and connections within artistic and philosophical circles.
