In 2004, Zurab Tsereteli unveiled a five-meter high statue of Vladimir Putin, dressed in judo gear, but instead of the acclaim he had expected after two years of work, it was met with scathing criticism from Kremlin officials. They stated, "We were shocked that such a renowned and accomplished artist like Tsereteli would engage in this kind of behavior. He should know better than anyone that President Putin has consistently spoken out against such actions. We are certain that this artwork will never be displayed outside the sculptor's private residence." The Russian Academy of Arts is headquartered on Ulitsa Prechistenka and features an art gallery showcasing the work of its president, the provocative artist Zurab Tsereteli. His notable works include statues of influential figures from Russia's politics, culture, and history, such as Vladimir Putin in a judo robe, Yuri Luzhkov, former mayor of Moscow, depicted as a street cleaner, and the last imperial family, all with their eyes closed. Additionally, the gallery highlights Tsereteli's native Georgia and features a massive apple with an interior adorned with sensual scenes.
