Chesterfield was a cunning politician who earned respect for his exceptional oratory skills, meticulously honed from studying the legendary Cicero. He relentlessly clashed with the powerful Sir Robert Walpole, and skillfully served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. As a patron of literature, Chesterfield earned the disdain of Dr Johnson, yet remained a passionate Francophile and close friend to the philosopher Montesquieu and poet Alexander Pope. A sophisticated man of refined taste, his stoic philosophy emphasizing dignity and cultivating the arts is beautifully encapsulated in the renowned Letters to His Son, published posthumously. This sculpture is crafted by Louis Francois Roubiliac (1702-1762).
