This statue head, carved to fit onto a larger figurative monument, depicts Emperor Nero (AD 54-68) in a priestly capacity, capite velato - his head is covered. The damnatio memoriae that followed Nero's demise undoubtedly led to this sculpture being taken from its original site, possibly identifying it with the Temple of Apollo on the Palatine Hill.
