Portrait of Napoleon at The State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg
myminifactory
In 1802, Italian sculptor Antonio Canova (1757-1822) created a striking bust and statue of the first consul of France. Drawing inspiration from the greatest images of ancient times, Canova returned to his subject multiple times, producing numerous portraits in marble and bronze. His initial piece presented a commander devoid of clothing or attributes that could be seen as indicative of the era. The sleek, refined surface of the marble creates an aura of detachment, separating it from time. By grounding his work on classical models, Canova crafted an idealized image of a resolute military leader, exuding inner strength and poised to embark on his conquest of Europe.
