Borís Danílovich Korolyóv or Korolev; (1884/85–1963) was a prominent Soviet sculptor-monumentalist, respected teacher, and influential public figure. As an accomplished artist, Korolyóv spearheaded the emergence of the Soviet school of sculpture, its core identity, but he also emerged as one of the pioneering figures in the avant-garde movement. In the 1920s, Korolev played a pivotal role in implementing Lenin's vision for monumental propaganda. Through his own sculptural masterpieces, Korolyóv effectively blended Realism with elements of Impressionism and Cubism. Born in Moscow and educated at the prestigious Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under Sergei Volnukhin, Korolev was a dedicated revolutionary, deported twice for his bold political activism, and a leading figure of avant-garde sculpture in revolutionary Russia.
