Mussorgsky Modest Petrovich (21 March [O.S. 9 March] 1839 – 28 March [O.S. 16 March] 1881) was a Russian composer who led The Five. He revolutionized Russian music during the romantic period, constantly pushing to establish a distinctive Russian musical identity in direct contrast to traditional Western music conventions.Many of his compositions were driven by Russia's rich history, folklore, and strong nationalist themes. Notable works include the opera Boris Godunov, the orchestral tone poem Night on Bald Mountain, and the piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition.For years, Mussorgsky's creations were mostly known in forms revised or completed by other talented musicians. Many of his most valuable compositions have gained recognition posthumously in their original versions, and some of the original scores are now available to music enthusiasts.
