Salonia Matidia was the only child and daughter of Ulpia Marciana and Gaius Salonius Matidius Patruinus, a wealthy praetor. Her maternal uncle, the Roman emperor Trajan, treated her like his own daughter since he had no children. When Matidia's father died in 78 CE, she went to live with her mother and Trajan, who was married to Pompeia Plotina. Despite being referred to as the "So-called Matidia," it is clear that she belongs to the prominent Ulpic Emperor family line, which is a confirmed fact by Bernoulli's research.
