Mary Tighe comes from Dublin, where her mother, Theodosia Tighe, led a Methodist congregation and her father, William Blachford, served as a Church of Ireland clergyman and librarian with great dedication. Mary's childhood was marked by strict adherence to her faith, which ultimately set the stage for her marriage at twenty-one to Henry Tighe (1768-1836), her first cousin who sat in the Parliament of Ireland for Inistioge, County Kilkenny. While their union is believed to have been troubled, few details are known about it.
