This majestic head originated from a colossal portrait bust or statue of Lucius Verus, co-emperor with Marcus Aurelius (AD 161 - 180). At the start of his reign, Verus was dispatched to the East to lead military operations against the Parthians, and although the war concluded successfully in AD 166, his returning troops brought back the plague, which devastated the Empire for several years afterwards. Ancient sources compare him unfavorably with Marcus Aurelius, but this portrait showcases a regal dignity that contradicts his reputation as an idle and dissolute ruler. It exemplifies Antonine style through its use of lavish drillwork in the hair and engraved eyes to dramatize the naturally realistic image. This object is part of "Scan The World".
