Nikolay Andreyevich Andreyev(1873 — December 24, 1932) was a Russian sculptor, graphic artist, and stage designer who made significant contributions to the world of art. Born in Moscow, Andreyev began his artistic journey as a young man under the guidance of Sergey-Volnuchin and soon became associated with the esteemed Peredvizhniki group of realists in 1902. His brother V.A. Andreyev was also an accomplished sculptor. As a native Moscovite, Andreyev's impressive portfolio includes two iconic Moscow statues that have become synonymous with his artistic style. One such masterpiece is the bronze figure of Gogol seated atop a base adorned with intricate bronze friezes depicting the renowned author's greatest characters. Completed in 1909 and situated on Gogol Boulevard, this striking work of art was criticized for its impressionistic approach and somber tone. The Stalin regime allegedly harbored disdain for Andreyev's creation, which ultimately led to its removal from public display in 1952 amidst intense controversy. Replaced with a more conservative Soviet-style representation of Gogol crafted by Nikolai Tomsky, the original statue remains a testament to Andreyev's innovative spirit and enduring influence on Russian art.
