Marie Kalmus was an Estonian sculptor, her path began as a typist in post-telegraphy until 1902. She then spent 15 years working in St Petersburg for the Ministry of Roads. After that, she studied singing at Petrograd Conservatory, but illness forced her to give up this pursuit and instead enrolled in sculpture classes under M. Malyshev at Petrograd Academy of Arts in 1919. Following her move to Tallinn, Marie studied sculptures under Jaan Koort's guidance from 1921-1922 at the Tallinn Art Industry School. From 1923-1924, she continued her studies at Otto Winkler Private Studios in Dresden. She then traveled to Paris where she honed her skills with Rodin's assistant Antoine Bourdelle from 1926-1927 and architect Lutzansky. Marie showcased her work at the 1927 Paris Autumn Salon exhibition. As a freelance artist, she focused mainly on realistic portraiture in Tallinn from 1927. Since 1932, Marie was a member of the Estonian Association of Artists, participating in domestic exhibitions during the pre-war years.
