This portrait of Konstantin Pavlovich stands out for its genuine human touch: youthful features reflect the lively spirit of Tsar Nicholas I's son, echoing the pressing concerns of that era. Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich of Russia (1827-1892) was the second son of Tsar Nicholas I and younger brother of Tsar Alexander II. During Alexander II's reign, Konstantin served as an admiral in the Russian fleet, implementing significant reforms to strengthen the Russian Navy. He played a pivotal role in ending serfdom. However, his tenure as Viceroy of Poland (1862-1863) was marked by controversy and ultimately led to his recall to Russia, where he faced intense criticism for his liberal views. Following the assassination of Alexander II in 1888, Konstantin's reputation began to suffer, and he fell out of favor with the new tsar, Alexander III. As a vocal proponent of liberal ideas, Konstantin found himself increasingly at odds with Alexander III, who systematically stripped him of his official roles. The subsequent years were marred by personal struggles and family hardships. A debilitating stroke left him an invalid, and he spent the remainder of his life in decline.
