The young emperor, deceased at the tender age of nineteen, is immortalized in a youthful portrait, dated to the inaugural years of his reign. Gordian III (Latin: Marcus Antonius Gordianus Pius Augustus) ruled Rome from 238 AD to 244 AD. At thirteen years old, he became the youngest sole legal Roman emperor in the empire's history. Born on January 20, 225 AD, Gordian was the son of Antonia Gordiana and an unidentified Roman senator who passed away before 238. His mother, Antonia Gordiana, was the daughter of Emperor Gordian I and younger sister of Emperor Gordian II. Very little is known about his early life before his ascension to power. In 238 AD, he adopted the name of his maternal grandfather, assuming a legacy that would shape his reign.
