Portrait of George Norbertovich Gabrichevsky, born in 1860 and deceased in 1907, stands as Russia's most distinguished microbiologist and epidemiologist. In 1888, he authored his doctoral dissertation on the excitability of muscles, showcasing his profound expertise. Between 1889-1891, Gabrichevsky worked alongside I. Mechnikov, E. Roux, P. Koch, Emmerich, and P. Ehrlich, focusing primarily on bacteriology and hematology. His most notable accomplishments lie in the dissemination of bacteriological knowledge across Russia. In 1891, he established a clinic at the hospital's bacteriological Chernoff division. Gabrichevsky founded the University of Moscow Bacteriological Institute in 1895, which would go on to create a school of renowned bacteriologists. In 1894, he successfully developed antidiphtheritic serums and vaccines against scarlet fever, paving the way for their widespread application. His work primarily centered around diphtheria (method for producing toxin, immunity, diagnosis, or serum treatment), scarlet fever, and streptococcal theory of scarlet fever.
