The Artist This portrait honors Filippo Brunelleschi. Who is Depicted? Filippo Brunelleschi (1377 – April 15, 1446) was an Italian designer and a prominent figure in architecture. He is recognized as the first modern engineer, planner, and sole construction supervisor. As one of the founding fathers of the Renaissance, he is known for developing a technique for linear perspective in art and building the dome of the Florence Cathedral. Brunelleschi's formulation of linear perspective heavily relied on mirrors and geometry to "reinforce Christian spiritual reality." This technique governed pictorial depiction of space until the late 19th century. Its influence extended far beyond the realm of art, shaping the rise of modern science in profound and unexpected ways. Brunelleschi's accomplishments also include architectural works, sculpture, mathematics, engineering, and ship design. His surviving works are primarily found in Florence, Italy. Unfortunately, his two original linear perspective panels have been lost. He is an Italian sculptor and architect, and he was adopted by Filippo Brunelleschi in 1419.
