The portrait without hairstyling, carved apart to be secured by a pin, reveals the face of Faustina Major, wife of Antoninus Pius. Evidence of coarse shaping can be observed at the base of the neck for its attachment into the body. The separate carving of the hair, intricately styled in elaborate designs, became a common technique between the second and third centuries. This head dates back to the period of Antoninus Pius (AD 138-161).
