Princess Eugenia Maximilianovna of Leuchtenberg was born on April 1, 1845. She is the daughter of Maximilian de Beauharnais, third Duke of Leuchtenberg, and his wife Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna of Russia. Although she belonged to the French House of Beauharnais, Princess Eugenia spent her life in Russia where she was raised by her mother. In 1868, Princess Eugenia married her distant cousin Duke Alexander Petrovich of Oldenburg and had a son named Peter Alexandrovich. The couple became renowned for their charity work throughout Russia.
