Portrait of Antinous
myminifactory
This bust of Antinous is a plaster replica of an original marble sculpture located in the Pio Clementino collection at The Vatican Museums (Inv. 251). It stands next to the deified full figure Baschai Antinous, created posthumously. The portrait showcases Antinous' characteristic fleshy and youthful beauty, particularly defined by severe corkscrew curls, a common style of his idealized likeness. The peculiar features of this bust have led many experts to suggest it as a true portrait of Antinous, although this theory has been disputed on the grounds that the treatment of the hair better suits divinity than humanity. Many versions of this bust still exist (Vatican No. 636, Vienna Kunsthistorisches No. 1.91, and Antiken Sammlung No. 60/SK364). The back does not accurately reflect the original marble bust due to its position during digitization.
