This statue of Antinous was unearthed at Hadrian's Villa. Antinous (d130) was a Bithynian youngster who served as the cherished companion and favorite of Roman Emperor Hadrian (76-138). Antinous tragically met his demise by drowning in the Nile, prompting Hadrian to establish the city of Antinopolis on the site of his death as a lasting tribute. During the remainder of his reign, Hadrian ordered the creation of numerous hundreds of statues commemorating Antinous.
