Portrait of Antinous (as Dionysus?)
myminifactory
The head of this sculpture is taken from an ancient type depicting Antinous as Dionysus, recognizable by his wreath of ivy. The rest of the bust was added later and attached to the original head. A full figure version can be found at The Vatican's Sala Rotonda 540, which was originally draped in bronze. This work originated from The Townley Collection, one of the first pieces to arrive at The British Museum. According to Townley, the sculpture is "a head larger than life of Antinous, deified as Bacchus, crowned with a wreath of ivy." While this identification is widely accepted, there's no solid confirmation.
