The marble bust was adapted on a stone pedestal to represent the sculptor Giambologna in Cardinal Richelieu's gallery of portraits of artists. The model, unidentified, sports a long beard which was fashionable in Venice around 1600. Giambologna was a Flemish sculptor, celebrated for his marble and bronze statuary in a late Renaissance or Mannerist style. Born in Douai, Flanders, he studied architecture and sculpture with Jacques du Broeucq in Antwerp before moving to Italy in 1550. He made detailed studies of classical antiquity and was influenced by Michelangelo's work, but developed his own unique style. Giambologna received his first major commission from Pope Pius IV for the colossal bronze Neptune and subsidiary figures for the Fountain of Neptune in Bologna. He spent most of his productive years in Florence, where he settled in 1553 and became a member of the prestigious Accademia delle Arti del Disegno. Giambologna's works are known for their sense of action and movement, as well as their refined surface finish. Among his most famous pieces is the Mercury, which depicts the god poised on one foot, supported by a zephyr. He also created many sculptures for garden grottos and fountains in the Boboli Gardens of Florence and at Pratolino. Giambologna's influence can be seen in later sculptors such as Adriaen de Vries, Pietro Francavilla, Pierre Puget, Pietro Tacca, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and Alessandro Algardi. His small bronze reductions were prized by connoisseurs at the time and continue to be admired today.
