Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov, a legendary Russian military leader, was born in Moscow on November 24, 1729 or 1730. This national hero rose to prominence as the Count of Rymnik, Count of the Holy Roman Empire, Prince of Italy, and last Generalissimo of the Russian Empire. Many historians regard Suvorov as one of history's greatest generals, undefeated in over 60 large battles despite frequently facing numerical disadvantages. Suvorov joined the Imperial Russian Army at 17 and quickly distinguished himself through his military prowess. He studied military history extensively during his youth and made a name for himself on the battlefield early in life. In 1762, he was promoted to colonel following his success in the Seven Years' War. When war erupted with the Bar Confederation in 1768, Suvorov seized Krakow and led decisive victories at Lanckorona and Stołowicze, marking the beginning of the Partitions of Poland. His military achievements earned him promotion to general. Suvorov's notable campaigns include his victory at the Battle of Kozludzha during the Russo-Turkish War of 1768–1774. He went on to become General of the Infantry in 1786, leading Russian forces to crushing victories at the Battle of Rymnik and Siege of Izmail. These triumphs led to his appointment as Count of both the Russian Empire and Holy Roman Empire. In 1794, Suvorov put down a Polish uprising by defeating them at Maciejowice and storming Warsaw. He maintained close ties with Empress Catherine the Great but frequently clashed with her son, Paul I. After Catherine's death in 1796, Paul dismissed Suvorov for disregarding his orders. However, the coalition allies insisted that Paul reinstate Suvorov as a field marshal. Suvorov was given command of the Austro-Russian army and led them to victory against the French at Cassano d'Adda, Trebbia, and Novi. His successes earned him the title Prince of Italy. Despite being surrounded by the French in the Swiss Alps after his planned Russian reinforcements were defeated, Suvorov skillfully led a strategic retreat while fighting off the much larger French force. He returned to Russia with minimal casualties, solidifying his position as Russia's fourth Generalissimo. Throughout his illustrious career, Suvorov received numerous accolades from Russia and other countries. His military manual, The Science of Victory, became famous for its theories on warfare. He left a lasting legacy in Russian military history and is widely regarded as the greatest Russian military leader. Several institutions, monuments, and awards bear his name in recognition of his remarkable contributions to military strategy and leadership.
