Cleanthes of Assos flourished around 330 BC - 230 BC. He was a Greek Stoic philosopher and the second leader of the Stoic school in Athens after Zeno's passing. Originally a boxer, Cleanthes moved to Athens where he studied under Zeno's tutelage. To support himself, Cleanthes worked as a night-time water-carrier while attending Zeno's lectures. Following Zeno's death around 262 BC, Cleanthes became the leader of the school for the next 32 years. During his tenure, Cleanthes successfully preserved and expanded upon Zeno's teachings. He introduced new concepts in Stoic physics and developed Stoicism according to the principles of materialism and pantheism. Among the surviving fragments of Cleanthes' writings is a notable hymn to Zeus. His most prominent student was Chrysippus, who went on to become one of the most influential Stoic thinkers.
