Portrait of a Retired Townsman at The British Museum, London

The figure stands before us with a tranquil demeanor. His crystalline eyes imbue him with a soft, human-like quality. Many affluent townspeople, as they aged, took Buddhist vows. Like monks, they often shaved their heads, renouncing vanity. Some continued to lead active secular lives, while others entered semi-retirement to prepare spiritually for the inevitable. The townsfolk believed that by creating portraits like this one, often as a memorial after death, they could preserve their family's success. In effect, the household head remained watchful over them. This object is part of "Scan The World".
