The expression on her face is surprisingly unremarkable compared to that of the man who appears to be deeply troubled and austere. These are the words of Max Freiherr von Oppenheim (1860-1946), the excavator of this seated couple. This portrait, likely from a cult complex at Tell Halaf/Guzana in northeastern Syria, may depict esteemed, possibly even regal ancestors. According to ancient Oriental customs, the spirit of the deceased could persist through an image. Through regular offerings, their survivors honored their dead or ancestors, thereby ensuring a more enduring existence in the afterlife.
