This portrait has been identified as Menander (321/41-291/90), the most renowned representative of New Comedy. A great dramatic poet, he was celebrated with a statue crafted at the end of the 4th century B.C. by Kephisodotos and Timarchos, sons of Praxiteles, which stood proudly in the Theatre of Dionysos, featuring him seated in all his glory. The head discovered in Athens is part of a Roman replica of this iconic statue.
