Portrait bust of an old man

Portrait bust of an old man

myminifactory

Originally sculpted in the middle of the 3rd c. A.D. and reworked in the years of Theodosius the Great. The large eyes with the intense gaze bring us to the threshold of Byzantine art. The toga was chiseled away in later years, apparently to eliminate the man's Roman identity and recast him as a Saint or Apostle. This is corroborated by the fact that it was found in the Agora, where Christian worship was practised in the 6th c. A.D.
