Portrait bust of a Barbarian

myminifactory

This ancient portrait bust of a male Barbarian is believed to have originated in Caesarea, Turkey around 100 AD. The height and shape of the bust suggest it dates back to the time of Trajan or Hadrian, while the short beard indicates a style reminiscent of Hadrian's era. On the round base, which bears a resemblance to the Vilonius bust (Poulsen, 1951 - no.586 a), an inscription is inscribed: Eubulos and Likinnios, also known as Licinius, dedicated the bust to their father Jason, son of Jazemis. A sense of quiet melancholy pervades this male portrait, whose weary eyes and narrow nostrils convey a delicate health. The long hair and features evoke a Scythian, the people of ancient Russia. Today's Russian peasants have retained these physical characteristics and expressions.
