The current church of Santa Maria de Moreda has a historical precedent in the Monastery of Santa Maria de Moreda, located on the same site. It was a Benedictine monastery that depended on Santa Maria la Real de Najera. The monastery first appears mentioned in 1193 in a list of churches from which the Bishop of Calahorra did not receive rights because it was prevented by the monastery of Nájera. Afterward, the monastery was abandoned by the monks and became the parish church on which the current church was probably built.
