Okay, full disclosure: I'm a total Portal newbie, never having experienced the games firsthand, but picking up tidbits from fans and online resources. However, even without playing the series, I've heard of the infamous Companion Cube; apparently, it was GLaDOS's twisted experiment to gauge how players would react when something they cherished got torched. So, let's skip that dramatic incineration scene and give a thoughtful gift to someone inside this little cube instead! Apparently, cake is somehow involved, but I'm not entirely sure why...
