Due to an alarming surge in Covid-19 patients with no signs of slowing down, there is a pressing need for Mechanical Ventilators to address the respiratory challenges and difficulties faced by them. This project focuses on designing a simple, compact, portable, and efficient two or multi-patient mechanical ventilator and building a fully functional prototype of the design. The ventilator operates using a cylinder-piston pump setup that draws in atmospheric air and delivers it to a bladder. There are two cylinder-piston systems whose axes are perpendicular to each other and connected via a common shaft through which power is transmitted by a motor (servo). Then, sufficient oxygen is delivered to the patient at the required pressure and volume, taking into account various breath/min rates depending on the patient's capabilities and requirements for volume or pressure. The pressure and volume must be carefully monitored considering factors such as FiO2, PEEP, tidal volume etc. To prevent mixing of inhaled gases and exhaled gases, the ducts are supported with unidirectional valves. The machine is governed by an Arduino-based microcontroller, which processes feedback from various sensors of respiratory requirements such as inflation volume, pressure etc., and human feedback such as heartbeat detection. It features a user-friendly UI and easy-to-control and monitor mechanisms including gauges, valves or keys. The compressed air is filtered before it reaches the patient for safety. If any variance in the machine's function is detected, an alarm alerts medical personnel. The aim of this project is to deliver a highly efficient mechanical ventilator in every aspect such as space, size, efficiency, cost, safety, and multi-access. This will be dedicated to Medical aids provided by state or central government, NGOs, Shelters etc., where a dire requirement for such ventilators exists.
