The Porsche 911 - pronounced Nine Eleven or Neunelfer in German - has been built since 1963[1] by Stuttgart-based Porsche AG in Germany. With a flat-six engine mounted at the rear, it's powered by independent suspension on all four wheels. Its design has continued to evolve while retaining its original concept. Until the introduction of Type 996 in 1998, air-cooled engines drove this sports car. The last air-cooled Porsche model was 993, built between 1994 and 1998.[3][4] In competition, private teams and Porsche's factory team have made modifications to this vehicle for racing, rallying, and other motorsports. It is among the most successful cars in international competitions. During the mid-1970s, a naturally aspirated 911 Carrera RSR took top honors at major world championship races such as Targa Florio and the 24 Hours of Daytona. In contrast, it defeated prototypes at those events. In 1979, Porsche won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with their 935 turbo model, an adaptation of the 911 design.[5] In a worldwide poll to determine the car of the century in 1999, the Porsche 911 came in fifth place among the top five models.[6] Two models out of these remained continuously in production throughout - including the original Beetle which stopped being made until 2003. It also shares with its ancestor the Porsche 356, a design principle used to make air-cooled engines on both models cool and function as intended for many years before eventually being switched to water-cooled. Since then, over one million Porsche 911 vehicles have been built and remained popular well after they were first made in 1963
