Fossil specimen of the demosponge Phymatella sp. originates from the Upper Cretaceous period, specifically located in Hover, Germany (PRI 70589). The fossil also includes a belemnite along with an additional unidentified sponge that likely grew on its surface. This specimen is part of the extensive research collections at the Paleontological Research Institution, situated in Ithaca, New York. Measuring approximately 4.5 cm in length, Phymatella sp. showcases a distinct demosponge fossil. In contrast, the belemnite measures around 6.5 cm in length, while the unidentified sponge attached to it extends about 4 cm in length. This model was created by Emily Hauf, who brought this fascinating specimen to life.
