Porcelain Bowl #4

While Dr Iskandar's collection of bowls honors the master of porcelain, David Leach, it nonetheless proclaims its own carefree character that is distinct from Leach's refined and measured approach. Dr Iskandar's bowls are unique and unpredictable. They have irregular edges, punctured holes, small bumps on their bodies and even one that refuses to stand upright - falling to rest unevenly. Dr Iskandar's writings about porcelain offer valuable insights. He praises porcelain for producing bowls "so thin they seem filled with light" and which "hum" as if they were "made for a sacred purpose". He adds poetically that porcelain's fleeting nature seemed "almost like shards of my memories". Still, he reveals it was "a kind of agony" to work with porcelain because of its limited malleability and demanding requirements and most of all because it was "not me".
