A discussion about home-made ball gears made me realise that the simplest gear geometry can be made from popsicle sticks. These models compare 3d printed versions of the 'popsicle gear' to its spur gear equivalent (20 deg pressure angle). The gears are mutually interchangeable. I notice that the popsicle gear has a distinct rattling sound (because of the 0 deg pressure angle) and are more prone to binding.
