The colossal statue stands at an impressive three meters high. On October 5th, 2011, Cardinal Philippe Barbarin, Archbishop of Lyon, and Mayor Gérard Collomb jointly unveiled this masterpiece to commemorate a cherished milestone: the Pope's twenty-fifth anniversary visit to Lyon. French sculptor Elisabeth Cibot brought her vision to life with this stunning work. John-Paul II is depicted standing courageously beside the iconic Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, his eyes gazing out over the city of Lyon as he extends a blessing, echoing the very gesture he performed on October 5th, nineteen eighty-six – the day he first visited Lyon.
