Pope Gregory XIII, born Ugo Boncompagni on January 7, 1502, served as the Pope of the Catholic Church from May 13, 1572, until his death in 1585. He is renowned for initiating and being named after the Gregorian calendar, which remains the globally accepted civil calendar to this day. During his papacy, Gregory fostered numerous cultural patronages that reflected his leadership style. He strengthened many ecclesiastical and diplomatic envoys sent to Asia, particularly to the islands of Japan and the Philippines. Notably, he was the first Pope to appoint the Immaculate Conception as Patroness of the Philippine Islands on February 9, 1579, through the Papal Bull Ilius Fulti Præsido.
