Pongo pygmaeus (Linnaeus, 1760) - the Bornean Orangutan - is a critically endangered species found primarily in the rainforests of northern Borneo. This male adult specimen is identified by its MZB catalog number: 2001-0286. The fossil record shows that orangutans have been present on this island for millions of years, and the discovery of a right fibula bone fragment provides valuable insights into their evolution. The fact that it was found in a Spanish zoo suggests that it may have originated from a collection gathered by European explorers during colonial times. On November 6th, 2001, this remarkable specimen was on display at the Barcelona Zoo in Spain, where it continues to fascinate visitors and scientists alike with its unique characteristics.
