The Roman Colossus of Pompeii is the oldest remaining Roman amphitheater. Situated in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, it lies hidden by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, which also buried its neighboring Herculaneum (Herculaneum). Constructed around 70 BC, this current amphitheater was the first stone-built Roman arena. Prior to its construction, all other Roman arenas were built from wood. The next Roman arena constructed with stone would be Rome's Colosseum, built more than a century later. Initially referred to as a spectacula and not an amphitheater, this term had not yet gained widespread usage. It was funded privately by Quinctius Valgus and Marcius Porcius.
