Pomona was a goddess celebrated for her boundless abundance of fruitful riches in ancient Roman mythology and worship. Her name originates from the Latin word "pomum," which specifically denotes orchard fruit, highlighting her deep connection to nature. As a wood nymph, she embodied the essence of the forest. In the legendary tale narrated by Ovid, Pomona refused the affections of Silvanus and Picus, woodland deities, but ultimately surrendered to Vertumnus' cunning, who disguised himself as an elderly woman to win her heart. They shared a sacred festival on August 13th, commemorating their union. The priest responsible for honoring Pomona was known as the flamen Pomonalis, while her attribute symbolized the pruning knife. Pomona reigned supreme over fruit trees, gardens, and orchards, safeguarding and nurturing these precious gifts of nature. In a unique distinction among Roman deities, she lacked a Greek counterpart, yet often found herself associated with Demeter. Her role extended beyond mere protection to include careful cultivation of the fruit trees themselves. Pomona's artistic depictions frequently feature her holding a platter of fresh produce or a cornucopia, symbolizing her profound connection to the natural world. A statue of Pomona proudly stands atop the Pulitzer Fountain in Manhattan's Grand Army Plaza, while another impressive statue can be found in Reykjavik, Iceland, situated just north of the BSI Bus Station. Pomona's influence extends beyond ancient mythology, as she is briefly mentioned in C.S. Lewis's beloved children's book Prince Caspian.
