Polyhedra - Hinged Nets and Snap Tiles
thingiverse
Update: The modular snap-tiles' design in this model has been improved for consistency with the Customizer, allowing modifications to size, number of snaps, and tolerances. Check out <http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:208591> for details! This Thingverse entry is part of the Makerbot Academy Math Manipulative Challenge and includes eight hinged polyhedral nets and five types of modular snap tiles for creating various polyhedra models. All models were designed specifically for the MakerBot Replicator 2, with careful testing to ensure easy printability at .3mm/low resolution without rafts or supports. Educational value: Polyhedral nets and hinged models are standard tools in K-12 math curricula and teacher-prep courses. These models provide sturdy, easy-to-assemble and dismantle polyhedra, perfect for classroom use without the need for tape or additional connectors. Get creative with these models - the Tinkercad files used to create them are publicly available, allowing teachers and students to edit, remix, or extend as needed. Adjust snap tightness, hinge flexibility, or polyhedral net designs with ease in Tinkercad, even if you're new to 3D modeling. This collection includes hinged nets for Platonic solids like the tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron, and icosahedron, as well as other polyhedra such as square pyramid, hexagonal prism, and rectangular rhombohedron. Individual snap tiles are available for semi-regular and combination polyhedra, including triangles, squares, pentagons, and hexagons with various snap configurations. Mix and match the snap tiles to create models like the cuboctahedron, truncated octahedron, stellated octahedron, icosidodecaheron, or even a 3D-printed soccer ball or Buckyballs! Two assembly videos are available for guidance. The MakerHome blog features days 80-90 on hinged tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron, icosahedron, hexagonal prism, and rectangular rhombohedron snap models, as well as the truncated and stellated octahedron, and icosidodecaheron. Don't forget to grab an editable copy of any model you'd like to modify at Tinkercad (<https://tinkercad.com/users/c4Y857uk4FJ-6d-lab>).
