Polychromy Wounded Amazon

Polychromy Wounded Amazon

This model was crafted using a 3D rendering of the Wounded Amazon statue from the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, which dates back to Rome, 150 A.D., and is made entirely of Marble. The discovery of an identical replica of this statue in Écija, Spain in 2002 revealed subtle hints of polychromy still visible on its surface, prompting a comparative color analysis of the Copenhagen, Ejica, and Berlin examples. The Tracking Colour Project / Tracking Colour Report was instrumental in shedding light on this fascinating subject. A full-scale model showcases the clothing as it appears today alongside a proposed coloring scheme derived from the tests conducted on the Ecija example. Two distinct faces highlight different interpretations that can be drawn from ambiguous language in color finding reports. By scrutinizing the quotes in the annotations alone, we are forced to question how confidently we can recolor the past or rely on models claiming to do so.
