Polished Stone Axe, Montemor-o-Novo
sketchfab
Provenance and description: The Anta Grande da Comenda da Igreja monument stands tall north of Montemor-o-Novo, a megalithic funerary structure built during the transition from the 4th to 3rd millennium BC. This massive neolithic funerary structure boasts a polygonal chamber with towering stones reaching heights of about 6m and a long corridor stretching out for 11m. Archaeologists excavated this site at the end of the 19th century and again in the 80's, uncovering an impressive collection of votive objects including a polished stone axe that is part of the exhibit. Crafted from a single block of amphibolite, the axe was cut into a conical shape with a distinctive fractured edge. Today, it proudly takes its place within the museological reserves of the National Museum of Archeology and can be seen on display at the Museum of the Convent of S. Domingos in Montemor-o-Novo.\nInventory number: CSD 0529
