The Polikarpov I-15 rival was a revolutionary Soviet fighter aircraft; it introduced a new era in fighter design, as the world's first low-wing cantilever monoplane fighter with retractable landing gear to attain operational status. This iconic plane made its debut in the mid-1930s and became the backbone of the Soviet Air Force at the beginning of World War II. Pilots affectionately referred to the diminutive "Ishak", nicknamed after a stubborn donkey, as it prominently featured in the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Battle of Khalkhin Gol and the Spanish Civil War. Nationalist pilots derisively called it the Rata ("Rat"), while Republicans called it Mosca ("Fly"). The Finnish Air Force even coined the nickname Siipiorava, or "Flying Squirrel," for this elusive plane.
