It's a large bear, comparable in size to the Kodiak bear (Ursus arctos middendorffi). A boar weighs around 350-700 kg (772-1543 lb), while a sow is roughly half that size. Although it's closely related to the brown bear, it has evolved to occupy a unique ecological niche. Its body is adapted for cold temperatures, snow, ice, and open water, allowing it to hunt seals, its primary food source. Polar bears are born on land but spend most of their time on sea ice. Their scientific name means "maritime bear" due to this fact. They hunt seals from the edge of sea ice, often relying on fat reserves when no sea ice is present. Because they depend on sea ice, polar bears are classified as marine mammals. Because of expected habitat loss caused by climate change, the polar bear is considered a vulnerable species. For decades, large-scale hunting raised international concerns about its future, but populations rebounded after controls and quotas took effect. For thousands of years, the polar bear has played a significant role in the material, spiritual, and cultural life of circumpolar peoples. It remains an important figure in their cultures. Historically, it's also been known as the white bear.
